Liberty Day and Your Health: What Freedom Really Looks Like

On November 1, the Virgin Islands celebrates Liberty Day, also known as Bull and Bread Day, in honor of David Hamilton Jackson. He fought for something that sounds simple but was revolutionary in his time: the right of ordinary Virgin Islanders to have a free press, to access information, and to speak the truth about their own lives. He believed that information belongs to the people. More than a century later, that belief sits at the very heart of what we do.

Because when it comes to your health, information is freedom too.

The link between Jackson's fight and ours

David Hamilton Jackson understood that a community kept in the dark cannot advocate for itself. He fought so that Virgin Islanders could read the news, know their rights, and demand better. We fight so that Virgin Islanders can know their cancer risk, understand their screening options, and demand the care they deserve. The subject is different. The principle is identical. A person who has the facts can protect themselves and their family. A person kept from the facts cannot.

The barriers that still exist

Let us be honest about what stands in the way here at home. Access to cancer screening in the Virgin Islands is not equal. Some residents are uninsured. Many are underinsured, meaning their coverage still leaves screening out of reach. Specialty care sometimes requires travel off-island. And information about genetic risk, early detection, and prevention does not always reach the people who need it most. These are not personal failures. They are systemic barriers, and naming them is the first step to breaking them.

What YAGF is doing to bridge the gap

This is the work our founder built and the work we continue. We help fund free and low-cost cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured Virgin Islanders. We bring education directly into the community so that families understand their breast and prostate cancer risk. And we keep pushing the conversation into the open, because silence is exactly the barrier Jackson spent his life fighting. Every screening funded and every family informed is a small act of the same freedom he stood for.

Your health is worth fighting for

November is also Movember, a month focused on men's health, and the message fits perfectly. Too many men, and too many people in general, treat their own health as something to deal with later. But your health is not a luxury to be earned once everything else is handled. It is the ground on which everything else stands. Booking the screening, asking the question, having the family conversation: these are acts of self-advocacy, and you have every right to them.

This Liberty Day, honor David Hamilton Jackson by claiming the freedom he fought for. Get informed. Get screened. And if there is a man in your life who keeps putting it off, this is the month to reach him. We are linked by genes. We are united by hope. Start at yagfoundation.org.
